John Palmer, who later became Dean of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Education, attended the Wilson School near Aurora, Illinois. He started in 1932, but even then the number of students was small, with never more than five students. One of them was Palmer’s brother. Palmer and his brother were the only students one year. During recess they read books or fought with each other. “I remember,” Palmer said, “the one teacher who lived in the city and who would bring three to four boxes of books every month. We just read and read.”

Twyla Hart Kieffer, a student at Shadow Lawn School in Walworth County, recalled the day when everyone wanted to go outside for recess, but they couldn’t. The problem wasn’t the weather either. Shadow Lawn School was next to a farm and a bull got loose and ran around and around the schoolhouse. As she said, “We were prisoners in the building. Having no telephone to call for help, the teacher decided on a plan. She stood at one side of the building and got the bull’s attention while a student in the upper grades slipped out to the neighbor’s. The neighbor corralled the bull and took it away.”3

When the distant sun is sinking

And your mind from school is free,

When of others you are thinking

Won’t you sometimes think of me?
